Varuna Proposal Deadlines - 15 February

Peter Bishop of Varuna is here from 24-26 February, offering major creative project direction and development consultations. Please send up to 10 pages to the SAWC by 15th February. Consultations are 40 minutes, cost $50 and by appointment. Places are limited. Successful applicants will be notified and offered appointment times.

Children’s picture books: ploughing a path to publication

Katrina Germein, author of the picture book "Big Rain Coming", draws on personal experience in considering how to improve your chances of having your story published. Recommended for those with an already completed, or near finished, picture book manuscript who are wondering what to do next.

Feeding your creative self: strategies to keep you writing poetry all through the New Year

Internationally recognised Victorian poet Lorraine Marwood will take workshop participants on an exhilarating ride through three quick and easy techniques that call into play the everyday world, its dialogue, its quirky details and turns them into poetic images.

Slash and burn: self-editing for fiction writers

Patrick Allington, freelance writer, editor and critic and author of "Figurehead", looks at the practical strategies involved in self-editing — the art of being ruthlessly honest with yourself — something which requires a completely different mindset and an alternative set of skills and knowledge to writing.

Two exciting initiatives…

Our first networking function for 2010 is with Varuna. Peter Bishop, its Creative Director, and a number of visiting publishers will be our special guests. We’ll be launching two exciting initiatives, a short story program in partnership with Scribe and an essay program in partnership with Griffith Review.

2010 Vietnam Travel Writers’ Workshop

Award-winning writer Max Anderson will take 14 aspiring writers to Vietnam for a unique travel writer’s workshop. The program is open to anyone with ‘an interest in writing and a passion for travel’ and will include ten workshops as part of the package. Full details in October’s "Southern Write".
